The Amazing Life Story of a Prominent Leader in the Dakota Territory and during the Early Days of Bismarck and North Dakota

How is it possible that an important historical figure like Linda Slaughter is not well-known and has never been honored in any significant way in North Dakota? Linda came to Ft. Rice in the Dakota Territory in 1871 with her husband and baby when it was a wild, dangerous territory. She became a prominent leader of the Dakota Territory and in Bismarck from the time it was known as Edwinton, and she recorded the early history as she lived it. She was an author, songwriter, poetess, teacher, journalist, school principal, deputy school superintendent, postmistress—and could Linda Slaughter ever ride a horse! She wrote a beautiful state song for North Dakota. She worked for the women’s right to vote 40 years before the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. She had friends like George and Libbie Custer, Susan Anthony, Colonel Lounsberry, and Belva Lockwood, the first woman to run for President of the United States. There’s so much more, but you need to read the book. Her life story is unforgettable!
